This is a great article. Really glad I found this. I'm a part-time designer, full-time songwriter and have been thinking a lot about what needs to be in not only my own soon-coming site, but in the sites I'm building for other artists.

I haven't had a chance to read the whole article yet, but I will.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts/ wisdom!

Hi Ben,

I loved this post.

http://nevadabase.co.uk now points to our flavors.me page (what a nifty service)... There are some annoying downsides like relatively slow updates but I agree that I think this is the best way for a band to organise their web 'presence'.

Thanks a lot

Ben, this is some seriously great thinking (and writing). Your brain is clearly running on all cylinders, and coming up with some of the best, clearest thinking on musician websites I've yet seen.

Excellent work, my friend :)

Thank you.

I'm currently in the process of thinking through what I need for my nascent band's website and your thoughts were extremely useful (as well as nicely written, if I may say so. Perhaps not surprising, if you're a fellow Paul Graham fan. Anyhow...)

I think you're spot on with the need for the website to match the spirit of the band, not just in design terms but in terms of what the site gives out and lets fans do.

Most of all, I think that what you do online should reflect what you're trying to achieve. Being mysterious and creating nothing shareable beyond the occasional acoustic demo recorded in a barn is fine if you're not trying to get discovered and get bigger, but not if you are.

And if you are, I definitely agree that bands need to create shareable stuff and that being mysterious doesn't help much.

Anyway, great little essay, thank you

Brennig: sounds great. Let me know next time you're planning an evening of muso banter and I'll hop on a bus out there. ;)

You should come to one of our discussion evenings in a certain public house in Eynsham. 'We' being most if not all of inLight and me as we discuss the state of mainstream music and try to steer the band to a place where they may get recognised. Last night we discussed onstage personae, performance and presence as opposed to the recorded output.

At times heated, always good-natured and not without some expletives. And some alcohol.
